As a queer man, growing up in the 70's with DW ,I've loved the show for years. Not every episode is fantastic, there's ups and downs, but this recent DW ,in my opinion sucks, lazy writing, bad acting, and characters I don't care about. I can totally understand why as you say, "certain people" aren't into it- it's agenda driven and there's such a huge departure from the core of what made DW what is was.

I'm certain that Thirteen wasn't just talking about her family, but every one of the Doctor's companions who died. Adric, Sarah Jane, pretty much all of the Eighth Doctor's Big Finish companions, and of course the Brigadier.

Wouldn't it be great if doctor who did come to an end, that the doctor did go back to Susan and said something along the lines of, "boy do I have stories to tell you!". It would be a great way to wrap everything up and could also explain away the inconsistencies in the show, as the doctor simply just misremembering events. Thoughts?

The biggest problem with this episode and the last is just how m uch they tried to shove into a relatively short time. This should've been a 3 parter. That being said while not perfect I think I liked it over-all. Still curious as to who Miss Flood is. She sorta reminds me of the master and we know the master can be patience and wait for the doctor to figure shit out. I think it's fine that Ruby's bio-mom is "normal". But I think they should've gone the meet the robinson route and not meet her. But did they ever explain the snow?

The one part I'd disagree on is the 'Goodbye' scene with Ruby - I absolutely loved the Doctor turning away as she leaves the TARDIS. Even with the Doctor having achieved more emotional maturity, there's always going to be an element of arrogance to him; he's a Timelord, hyper-intelligent that can offer an adventure no-one else can. He finds Ruby, someone who was abandoned like he was, and feels a sense of connection, coming right off the back of his new regeneration. Then she finds her birth parents, and decides to leave him. Understandably, there's a bit of him that's hurt by this. A bit of him is bitter that she's leaving him, and now he's back on his own again. I loved that moment because as much as this version of the Doctor is more open emotionally now, there's always that slightly darker side underneath the surface, that doesn't always come out, but it's always informing at least some of what he does and what he believes in.

I didn't really like his finales last time, and Russell fell straight back into his old habits, yikes. The scenes when Ruby leaves don’t land at al for Mel, I didn’t feel anything at all when watching there just hasn’t been enough screen time establish this relationship or at least the season format hasn't used well. With bringing things back such as Sutekh and references like the Einstein call back to Time and the Rani how is anyone who jumped on board with this season ? We've fallen back to series 9/season 22 territory with the show going completely up it's own backside.

I also hate that romantic subplot of Kate because it undermines her care for her subordinates. In the last episode, the fact that she gave the Doctor a death glare cos he endangered her employees to death gives her a lot of gravitas. Now, even though it is not the main drive, her reactions' possible drive by romance robs her characters of such gravitas

There's a quote that's attributed to Stalin (likely erroneously): "A single death is a tragedy; a million deaths is a statistic." I have a similar feeling about RTD's season finale and the "increasing" stakes. Kill everyone on Earth, or everyone in the whole universe, or everyone in the universe up and down the timeline... yeah I know that's gonna be reversed somehow, so that doesn't matter. But kill off the Doctor's Companion and attract his fury like in Hell Bent? Now that's an interesting story with stakes that actually matter.

I think if this has taught us anything, it's that it has reconfirmed that just because you enjoy subverting the audience and thought the last jedi had some fun ideas, doesn't make that plot point entertaining or rewarding to an audience. It's two for two now that it was an unsatisfying twist that didn't fit with previously conveyed information. I'm not saying the solution was to "make her a Palpatine or a Kenobi" etc (in this case don't make Ruby something like the doctor's granddaughter or Jack harkniss' kid or something), but the mother needed SOMETHING. My idea might be that an entity like a God occupied her body to deliver Ruby into the world (maybe as a good version of a harbinger) and so whenever video or other observation devices try to look at her or investigate that night, something akin to a perception filter is over top of her, similar to the old woman in 73 yards (wow wouldn't that have been interesting to make relevant). So basically, make the mother have the same effect as old Ruby where no one can see their face any closer than human visual acuity at 73 yards, no matter how close they get or what quality footage they use. Then you could make the mother normal, but for that one night, an entity, perhaps even the Goddess of Motherhood and/or birth/life placed her own harbinger into the world to combat the embodiment of death in the future because she knew that Sutekh would create his own downfall by trying to unravel the mystery of Ruby.

Everybody's dead, Dave. I think it would have been easier to swallow and better self-contained if Sutekh had hitched a ride during _Wild Blue Yonder,_ when the rules of reality were flimsy and malleable and things could leak through from unlikely places. That would have avoided all the "Wait, so he was there during the events of [x]? How does _that_ work?". The scene with the woman and the spoon felt like a vestigial fragment of a multi-stop treasure hunt, with the Doctor collecting various McGuffins that he needed to carry out his cunning plan. It also felt like a callback to an episode that never was, much like the various Susan Twist characters with all their impressive prosthetic makeups. I loved the tone of the scene where Ruby met Louise. All positivity and love. Though Ruby's use of "real mum" felt awkward and uncomfortable, I've read that Word of God is that her clumsy vocabulary and failure to use the preferred terminology was entirely deliberate, and down to her being 19 and flustered. I feel you with the frustration at supposed explanations that don't actually explain anything at all. That was actually my problem with _73 Yards_ - "The old woman was Ruby all along! Doesn't that explain everything?" uh... no? That doesn't explain anything at all? I'd rather it be left a mystery than be fobbed off with nonsense and told that it makes perfect sense. This wasn't the worst Who finale I've ever seen, but it was choppy and weirdly paced, and contained a lot of telling that seemed like it could/should have been shown.

RTD1 finales were way more emotionally satisfying for me. A lot of the problem lies with the length of the season now, there hasn't been much time to invest in 15 and Rubys relationship. Also, RTD1 arcs were subtler than now; this season had way too many mystery boxes. This finale doesn't hold together for me, far too much waffle, too many plot holes, too many questions either unanswered or poorly answered. Totally undermines the whole season.

There's an absolute obsession with these kinds of ponderings. I just would rather ask, how good is Doctor Who and of the answer is, Very then move along. It wasn't so long ago that people used to say, don't put a label on me. Now everything must be quantified. Everyone pigeonholed. I'm tired of people (not Council of Geeks, this is an interesting topic for a video) making everything about themselves. We used to be able to draw on the human condition from any kind of drama. We're not cowboys but we enjoy Westerns. We're not doctors but can enjoy hospital dramas. That ability seems to be lost.

46:10 I think that him not saying "I love you" back leaves it open for Ruby's "I love you" to indicate romantic love. I think that's the only reason why he doesn't say it. He realizes she does indeed have feelings a bit stronger than friendship, and he doesn't want to lead her on. I have mixed feelings, but I do like it, in a way. It would make sense that Ruby would have feelings for him that are a bit too strong, even if she's never "fallen" in love with him. However, I would have really liked an interaction where it was just friendly love. Even by the WAY Ncuti could have responded "I love you too" could have defined their relationship even more for her and for the audience, because sometimes you say it just because of the friendship and to help the other person. It could have worked on a more nuanced level instead of being poetic; it would have been beautiful.

I don't like a reset button. I don't mind a deus ex machina, or well I do mind but I also think they are a good device if they serve the story. I like soft "magic/sci fi" where rules are not rigid and defined. I love when the eagles are coming, when Fangorn forest eats all the orcs and when Gandalf arrives on the third day with the Rohirrim and they win the battle. And ending the conflict with everybody lives and hope is restored is wonderful fantasy escapism, and I fully support! I agree with the thing about the stakes, but I think RTD not only set the stakes too high but also makes the conflict so focused on the solution, and the rules around the logistics of the conflict and the solution. I didn't need Sutekh to explain why he could possess Mel, I don't care how your magic works. I care that this character that we love is gonna be forced to turn on our heroes and how that's gonna affect them. Also sidenote, Mel's styling with the huge sweater was so good!! I hated the "army"esque outfit on Ruby, she didn't look comfortable. But especially looked weird that she and the doctor changed to that matching outfits and Mel didn't. Anyway, about a reset button, I love Last of the time lords. The reset button works becasue the story is about Martha and the Doctor and how it impacted them individually and their relationship. And the conflict does impact Ruby, but in a logistic way, when they solved the mystery of her mum, the emotional trauma of all the experiences during the search has no (to us) observable effect on her. Ruby hasn't changed. And this have been my issue with her from the first episode (not the special bc it was just an introduction and not about getting to know her). There's this channel here on yt that does doctor who stuff, is it whoculture? With Ellie as the host. She said that she loved when Ruby tricked Sutehk with breaking the screen that showed the name of her mum, calling it Ruby's defining companion moment, and that it had been missing from Ruby this season. And I really disagree. I think Ruby has had those moments in every episode, but they never sprung from something. She has been a successful, confident go-getter, with a bit of trickster vibe from the start. And as much as I love the chemistry between Ncuti and Millie, their relationship still feel very flat because they never have any tension or conflict that tested and tightened their bond. It's like they just met, had "love" at first sight, moved in together and had a honeymoon phase, and now conviniently separated before the phase expires. I like a little mystery, I can be excited about a box, but I did not care about Ruby's birth mum. I felt like the show over and over kept telling me that I wanted to know about her and why I wanted to know about her. Same with Susan Twist. It was like lets put a subtle hint to something, but just to make sure nobody misses our subtle hint we should have a giant neon sign above it that says "LOOK AT THIS SUBTLE HINT". I also think a good mystery should be set so that people can figure it out if they pay attention to the right thing or have a certain knowledge. And, they couldv'e just asked the mum in person about the pointing...? Right now, I have questions about mrs. Flood that I do want an answer to, if all Susan Twist dubbles where put on the planets when the doctor landed and then simultaneously turned into the skull minion blowing the dust of death, why didn't mrs. Flood get skull face and blow dust? And why was she offed by the dust when the other minions wheren't?

I agree with the reveal. No problem with Ruby's mom being a normal person. It is just the build up and getting there. Why is she wearing a cloak? With RTD I think he sometimes is more about flash and being clever than the ending. I liked that Ruby's dad was just unaware. Wasn't told I too liked Ruby leaving by choice. I agree that I like companions who leave because it is time. Micky, Graham, Ryan, Dan, they got what they needed. They became better people and now it is time. As for Flood, we sort of get her power level. She is under Sutek as she was effected by the dust. So isn't anything too big. I just don't want to say she is anyone important as it will just be disappointing.

Very interesting and well argued ; I'd say the first character who was clearly intended to be gay was Stuart Hyde in the Time Monster, 1972: a positive portrayal (and he had quite a heroic role too). Most disappointing though was Rose saying the Dr was "so gay", clearly to be read as "so weak" in 2005.

I think what bothers me most about Ruby's mother reveal is the circularity. She's important/can't be seen because people think she's important, and she's seen as important because she can't be seen. Which arguably could be read as commentary on fan speculation, and could be somewhat justified through nonlinear conceptions of time, but still just doesn't quite work for me. The themes of memory feel compelling but not fleshed out enough fully as well

Here’s my idea for how the explanation for Ruby’s mother could have worked. The events of The Church on Ruby Road create several precarious paradoxes: first the Goblins steal Ruby as a baby after meeting her as an adult, then the Doctor goes back to 2004 to save her, prompted by her newfound non-existence. It’s safe to assume by the time the Doctor sees Ruby’s mother in 2004, the Tardis is working extra hard to maintain the delicate balance of time. We know Sutekh has an ill-defined ability tied to the Tardis’s perception filter, which allowed him to create Susan Triads. So what if: Sutekh’s usual attempt to create a Susan Triad at this moment was too much for the Tardis to handle and something happened, a glitch of sorts. Instead of creating a Susan Triad, Sutekh’s malfunctioning ability projects instead onto Ruby’s Mother, who happened to be standing exactly 73 yards from the Tardis, and she becomes permanently cloaked in a perception filter. Which is why no one could ever find her. And Sutekh, at the epicentre of this phenomenon, could not perceive her no matter how hard he tried, thus prompting his obsession with her. When Sutehk dies, the filter drops and Ruby can finally find her Mother, who is indeed just an ordinary person who’s always struggled to be noticed and is overjoyed to finally be seen.

Agreed about this being a very typical RTD episode, but I don't think this one was the worst. The Toclaphane one is still the worst to me. This one I think has more going for it overall, like you mentioned, some of the scenes were very nice. I also think that the visuals, especially Sutekh riding through the time Vortex, were really good. This Typhonian Beast was in general very well done I think. Wish we got more of him... Yeah, Sutekh was underused. He did so much more in Pyramids of Mars that having him just stand around the whole episode was a letdown. I did not notice the part where Kate was holding Ibrahim's hand. That is honestly pretty awful. I can't believe Russel would hint at something like that with a chad ace woman like Kate. Bad look. But yeah this was a big step down from the amazing set-up, but it's not devoid of goodness.

I freakin' love Mrs. Flood, also think I know who she is, and the 4th wall thing would have an explanation. No god, no Timelord - just a polite psycho. ;)

Very nice, thoughtful video. Just a data point: I have two adopted kids, and they call both me and their birth mother "Mom."

I actually don't know any adopted folk who haven't wanted to find their parents - maybe not to meet them, but just to know. Some for medical reasons, some for curiosity of the people and circumstances, even if they were happy with their upbringing.

Mrs Flood is giving me Mistress vibes now: her appearance on the roof top like a white-clad version of her previous Mary Poppins attire; calling the Doctor a 'clever boy'.

My main complaint is it was resolved way too quickly and we didn’t have time to sit with the terror of Sutekh’s death wave. I think we needed one more episode: a standalone story in the vein of Utopia or Turn Left, which leads to the Susan Triad/Sutekh reveal as a cliff hanger. Then we get a proper two part finale. Part 1: Sutekh is returning but not at full strength yet, they work out Ruby’s birth mother is tied up it in all (maybe Sutehk let’s something slip), thus organically prompting the investigation in the time window, we get some real consequences (i.e. character deaths) that won’t be undone later, and the episode culminates in Sutekh & his harbingers reaching full strength and initiating the full death wave. We end on The doctor’s agonised scream from the memory Tardis. Part 2 picks up with the scene with the mother and the spoon (pacing wise, that scene feels like the start of a new episode anyway). And then we just get way more time to experience the horror of sutekh’s empire of death as they travel around in the memory Tardis trying to find a solution, figuring out how Ruby’s mother factors in, finally confront Sutekh, and ultimately defeat him with a few more steps, switches in who’s winning, and a better sci-if explanation for why the death + death = life things actually works. When I imagine the episode spaced out like this it resolves most of my gripes. Then just fix the weird details in the conclusion to the Ruby’s birth mother story that Vera mentioned, which, again, if we had more time, would be much easier to do. Basically it all comes down to: 8 episodes is not enough!!!
